Hario V60 PourOver Method

Hello Coffee Lovers,

We got into roasting as a way to always enjoy, have, and share fresh-roasted coffee. As part of this mind-set, we also like to brew coffee as economical as possible and make great coffee. As much as we are into the Specialty Coffee and Third-Wave coffee scene, we understand that some people may not have the money for expensive grinders, scales, and such. We are going to share how we brew with the Hario V60 on the cheap.

You will need some basic supplies that can be found at any mass-merchandiser (Wal-Mart, Target) or online via Amazon.
1. Hot water kettle
2. Digital Scale
3. Hario V60
4. Burr Grinder (Hario Skerton or Porlex are less expensive hand grinders)
5. Carafe or brew directly into your mug.
6. Measuring cup

Basic Pour-Over Recipe

  1. Grind 2 grams of coffee for every 1 ounce of coffee desired. Ground coffee should be about the size of table salt. (ie. 16 grams for 8 ounce cup)
  2. Heat your water.
  3. Wet and rinse the paper filter to remove any paper taste and to pre-heat the brewer.
  4. Add ground coffee to the brewer and pour just enough hot water to wet the coffee grounds. At this point, the coffee should “bloom” if fresh enough. Regardless, let the coffee absorb the water for 30 to 45 seconds.

  5. Then pour hot water in a circular motion from the inside towards the outside being careful not to overflow the cone.
  6. Continue to pour until you have reached your desired amount of brewed coffee (8,10,12oz,etc.)
  7. Let the coffee finish dripping and enjoy your coffee.

The great thing about coffee is that it is very personal and every person can have their own methods and recipes. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different grind settings, amount of beans used, and amounts & temperature of water used.

Events Going On

Hi Coffee Lovers,

Black Squirrel Coffee has been  a little busy lately with some outreach in the local community. We were invited to brew coffee for the Book Club meeting at the local library. We were happy to provide fresh brewed coffee for the patrons as they met to discuss the chosen title for the month.

We also were invited back to the library to host our own brew methods class. Black Squirrel loves to share the passion and educate people about the wonderful world of specialty coffee and coffee in general. The two methods demonstrated were the Hario V60 pour-over and the Aeropress. We use these two methods extensively and were excited to share with folks about how easy and cost-effective it can be to make a great cup of coffee at home. The most important part of the coffee is having fresh beans to brew with!

Online Store NOW OPEN!

Hi coffee lovers and followers,

We are pleased and pretty stoked to announce that our store is now open. We decided to go through Square for purchases and our storefront. We currently have some great single-origin coffees available for purchase. In the future, and as we build more inventory, we are planning to offer four coffees, one from each of the four major coffee growing regions – Africa, South America, Central America, and Indonesia – as regular offerings. Then we will have a rotational selection that will be available in limited quantities and change often. Be sure to follow our blog and social media feeds for updates and new information.
